Honors and awards

Best News/Opinion Page

First Place, Best of the USA TODAY NETWORK Awards 2019

Recognized by USA TODAY NETWORK as the designer of the Detroit Free Press' "Courageous" page following the Larry Nassar sentencing. Entry was first place in the 2019 Best of the USA TODAY NETWORK Awards.

What the judges said: It is an impactful, and elegant way to deliver news on that tough day – after Dr. Larry Nassar was sentenced in the USA Gymnastics abuse case. Yes, it's an approach that has been done before, but this was done very well and stood above. It could have been a more predictable package of headlines, photos and text, but this did a much better job capturing the overriding emotion of the story: A sense of awe and inspiration at the bravery standing up to horrific evil.

Best Multi-Page Design

Q3 2018, USA TODAY NETWORK

Recognized by USA TODAY NETWORK as one of the designers of the Detroit Free Press's coverage of Aretha Franklin's death. Entry was awarded Best Multi-Page Design winner from Q3 2018.

What the judges said: The Aretha round-up featured an excellent mix of archival and live photos; great coordinated editing and use of visuals throughout. The design managed to capture a strong sense of the community mourning their Queen. And the staff totally delivered, day after day, angle after angle, during a multi-day "final tour." The double truck wrap was well-used and delivered an emotional sense of Aretha's funeral parade. Impressive, beautiful coverage of a legend.

Best Sports Page

Q2 2018, USA TODAY NETWORK

Recognized by USA TODAY NETWORK as the designer of the Detroit Free Press' "Maize & Blues" page following the University of Michigan basketball's loss to Villanova in the NCAA National Championship game. Entry was awarded Best Sports Page winner from Q2 2018.

What the judges said: Tyler Remmel's white bold sans headline and crisp use of typography frame beautifully the emotional hug between the coach and his forward.

Best News/Opinion Page

Q1 2018, USA TODAY NETWORK

Recognized by USA TODAY NETWORK as the designer of the Detroit Free Press' "Courageous" page following the Larry Nassar sentencing. Entry was awarded Best News/Opinion Page winner from Q1 2018.

What the judges said: The power of this page comes from what isn't included as much as what is. This daring visual statement honors the victims who came forward by putting their names forward amid nothing else. It easily could have been a more predictable package of headlines, photos and text. But this unconventional approach telegraphs the overriding emotion of the story: A sense of awe and inspiration at the bravery standing up to horrific evil.

Best Enterprise Design

Q4 2017, USA TODAY NETWORK

Recognized by USA TODAY NETWORK as one of the designers of the Louisville Courier Journal's coverage of the University of Louisville scandal. Entry was awarded Best Enterprise Design winner from Q4 2017.

What the judges said: We really liked the range of treatments here, some fronts with sheer breaking news and others with a more step-back style. One page even had a challenging double-header breaking news scenario to wrangle (“Game over” / “Pension plan revealed”). We liked the attempt on the “Bold businessman or bully?” (despite seeing some details we would have tweaked). That said — a bold attempt. And although the style is similar each day, it is not the same design repeated over and over. There was a lot of thought put into the challenge of maintaining the spirit from day to day, but creating type design solutions each edition that were unique, reflecting the news of that day.
